Val Maira, Piedmont

July, 2026

Val Maira sits at the edge of North-West Italy, at the border with France.
In the valley, locals speak Italian, French, and Occitan, an ancient French language now spoken by fewer and fewer people as years pass by.
We hiked for days high up in the mountains, leaving behind the excruciating hot weather behind, in the secluded valley. We met people, lots of marmots, ibexes, crows, and one solitary hawk.
