Inside the Caldera

(2024 - ongoing)

Phlegraean Fields is a large active caldera, home to a 1.5 million people.
Studies indicate that two major eruptions occurred in this region: The Campanian Ignimbrite, approximately 39.000 years ago, and the Yellow Tuff, which took place between 15.000 and 10.000 years ago. Since then, the area has been shaped by numerous smaller eruptions over millennia, resulting in a landscape marked by craters and volcanic lakes.

Bradyseism, a phenomenon characterized by alternating phases of ground uplift and subsidence, significantly impacts the Phlegraean Fields. In recent history, two notable events occurred between 1968 and 1972, and again between 1982 and 1984.
A new bradyseismic event began in 2005, with its activity increasing from late 2023 to the present day.

The project aims to document the population, their struggles in living within an active caldera, while also documenting the work of scientists in the field as they try to understand the behaviour of one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the World.
